Envision, Encourage, Experience, Empower
I am an academic librarian at Pima Community College's Downtown Campus Library, in Tucson. I enjoy working with adults, helping to meet their educational, as well as, personal, and recreational informational needs. I am a strong proponent of active learning, so I am always looking to make a presentation or research on a project more personal - believing if it's relevant to the student they are more likely to get something out of it by putting more into it!
I am also a doctoral candidate in Educational Technology at Pepperdine University. My dissertation is researching the disconnect between a community college library and their students. In my initial research I have found similar research on Colleges and Universities (mostly Research 1 schools), but none on community colleges. I believe this is because faculty, which includes librarians at Research 1 schools, must post research, whereas the faculty in community colleges does not have those requirements. (My initial findings is actually very little regarding libraries in community colleges, a void I hope to fill.) I am also interested in Web 2.0 and academic libraries, specifically community college libraries. This relates to my interest in Web 2.0, social networking applications and how they can be used for student and staff development.
In January 2009, I began teaching as an adjunct instructor at University of Wisconsin - Green Bay, offering an online graduate level course Survey of Emerging Technologies. It is designed for K-12 educators, although I have other disciplines in the course, which makes it very interesting. (I am in the process of developing a course on Copyright/Fair Use; launch date unknown at this time.) (This course is offered through The Stephens Group's, PODetc, and can be taken through UW-GB for credit or directly through PODetc for non-credit.)
Besides this, I have been a reviewer/judge on several projects, most recently a judge for the 2010 CODIE awards. I have also been a reviewer for the U.S. Department of Education's 2009 Improving Literacy Through School Libraries. I really enjoy being a reviewer as I can see what the future trends may be in education.
This past January (2010) I presented on my dissertation research so far at the the 2010 Hawaii International Conference on Education. Previously, four of us from our cadre presented on research at the 2008 Hawaii International Conference on Education and the Paris International Conference on Education, Economy and Society (July 2008)on our experience in using wikis as a collaborative tool for distance students. For our two semester statistics course, we were to work in groups and our group used a wiki for our knowledge management and communication tool, as we were located throughout California and in Arizona.
